This is really good! I’ve actually seen this in many people in my life, but I wonder if over time we actually let go of the negative emotions or just get better at hiding it.
Funnily, I’m learning how to extend or regulate the effects of highs and lows respectively.
For example, sitting—a lot longer—in the awe of a great experience, or allowing the clouds of certain negative emotions to simply drift across my mind, leaving a smaller residue than the previous time a similar experience occurred.
Comes from the urge to fully live, while being as regulated as possible. Cos life sometimes gives you very precious blessings and really steep moments.
I’ve had rough patches for rather longer stretches, and this helped keep me “steady” enough to see even more beautiful days.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Jack. You’re making more impact than you’re aware of.
I think a large part of the effect of external events is also our response to them and how we learn - ultimately there is always another turn around the bend regardless of good or bad.
I love this post, Jack. It’s wild how consistent this pattern is across experiences even founders exiting for millions often report the same post-high plateau.
